GENESIS'88 Birthday Party Cancelled on 10th December

Its with a sad and heavy heart that we must inform our members and guests that Genesis'88 Birthday Party Scheduled for 10th December has been CANCELLED. Unlike in the past the event wasn't stopped by law enforcement, governments, henchmen or anything remotely connected to such outcomes. Sadly due to an Administration Error on the part of the venue owners (license holders) we have no license. Believe us when we say, we didn't ever expect to be making such public statements. Genesis'88 Cancelled because we have no license…wow! Time has certainly changed.

We should also note that a few venues have been offered to us but none to the standard that Genesis'88 have used in the past. The reason we chose the last building was because of its authenticity as a bare boned warehouse. It felt so right we couldn't resist it but now running around looking at half arsed venues isn't the Genesis'88 style. We don't do parties for the sake of earning a few quid, if we did that we'd have come out the archives years ago.

Genesis'88 is about the moment, the people, the space, the kinetic energy. We are proud of this heritage and this is what has carried Genesis'88 into the 21st century. Our events are built to last within the memories of the people that attend them. The venues which have been put forward are ideal for some promoters. We wouldn't have even broke into them in the 1980s so why except this standard today in 2011. Some people are saying we should just have a party anywhere legal as long as its a party but i totally disagree. Much love, care and attention goes into every event that I'm (Wayne Anthony) personally involved in. Standing in some emergency building in 2011 puts me in a negative space and therefore i see no good reason to put anyone through that particularly Genesis'88.

Especially given the fact we have to jump so many legal hoops. If Genesis'88 is going this route then it must be done properly we hope you understand. We are looking at March 2012 to stage our next Genesis'88 event so stayed tuned to our official website and Brand New Online Radio Network (www.genesis88.co.uk). It should also be noted that any campaign we mount for Genesis'88 events wont all be done on Social Networks. Its important you become a MEMBER by subscribing via the website.

Believe us when we say that no-one is as gutted as Team Genesis'88 but we'll stick by our moral values…We know there's a silver lining in everything…

The Genesis'88 Reunion Sessions are fully underway as Britian once again embraces itself for Acid House mania. Our first Reunion for twenty three years happened on the 28th October 2011. The event brought a great many souls together for a night they wont forget for a long time. We were taken back the sheer volume of messages we recieved via Facebook, Email, phone texts, and social networks. We received over 800 messages via Facebook alone. We've posted a series of these messages in previous posts on the blog.

We know what your thinking, you wait twenty three years for a reunion and then we have two events in less than two months. In 1988 we had five big warehouse parties in less than two weeks over the Christmas period. Our first event was staged on Saturday 10th December 1988. Although we hadn't planned on staging another event unitl March 2012, an opportunity presented itself in such a way that we felt compelled to act upon it. Your only twenty three once so what better way to celebrate than joining kindred spirits in a warehouse enviroment equal to 1988. If your going to only one party over the Christmas then you wont wanna miss this Unique Acid House Experince presented by one of the UK's founding organsiations of the late eighties. We really look forward to celebrating Genesis'88 23rd Birthday with YOU...

In the late eighties no-one could take photos at the parties which acted a means of self defense for the promoters who were facing prison sentences if caught. The feedback we received from the recent Genesis'88 Reunion has been so immense that we felt it was near time to unleash the 'brand' once again on the world population. Today we can say world population because the internet allows us to interact with people in ways we wouldn't have thought about in the 1980s. In the days before twenty four hour clubbing, when clubs closed at 2.30am, a small bunch of people launched Acid House to the UK masses. Genesis'88 kicked off their tour in November 1988 in a warehouse in East London. Entrance was gained in numerous buildings which we fronted wearing business suits while carrying clipboards with fake documents pertaining to the company we represent (always a major company such as Sony, EMI, Channel 4 or super star management with clients such as George Michael).

Once we got stamped by local police we'd normally be completely behind the scenes so no-one really knew who we were unless from the inner circle. Very few photos were ever taken at Genesis events through fear of being arrested and placed on major charges that couldn't be beaten under the current hang-erm-high climate of the period. The press did a great job of demonising us and the law quickly changed. Promoters were now at risk of imprisonment, assists over £20,000 confiscated and compulsory 6 months in prison. You really had to have heart to continue the journey as a promoter. Genesis'88 moved forward at full speed.

The Genesis'88 Reunion on the 28th October was located opposite the Olympic Stadium of 2012 and broadcast across the internet live as it happened. We had friends in many countries locked on to the live stream and really enjoyed the concept of broadcasting our events. Within a week of the reunion we were on Skype with Danny Midi Man setting up an online radio station. We chose one of the free services because our main aim was to broadcast the party again for the people that were there and wanted to relive the moment. That's when a Genesis member called Boston stepped in and offered to build a fully functional online radio station.

The idea was to broadcast old skool sounds of the late eighties on the weekends but this quickly developed into providing a platform for all music. DJs from around the world are now lining up to play a set on Genesis'88. All musical tastes are catered for by internationally known DJs, local DJs, up n coming DJs…

We're fine tuning the station as we speak and testing it almost daily. In the future shows will be announced via Facebook Please Bookmark, Share, Email, Like… Big Love

Thanks 4 top night dude was wkd being able 2 share in the experience, only just recovering, ure set was pure brilliant, was hilarious when 1 of the other dudes on decks did summin & both u & the dude 2 ure right torches out wtf did he do, but he musta just bin messin cos tunes came right back on, was funny, the whole night was a gd laff. excellent tunes, excellent crowd & excellent vibe. u know how 2 put it 2gether brother, i arrived on me own as a stranger & left with a 1000 new friends. thanks again man, thoroughly enjoyed it ;)

It finally happened after a five week campaign that has left me and the team absolutely exhausted. My voice still hasn't returned and i don't expect it to return for another few days. That said when i tuned into Facebook today i was completely overwhelmed from the energy of comments left on my Facebook page by the people that came. I'll spend the next few weeks gathering videos / photos from everyone and post on blog…For now i wanted to share some of the comments I've received over the last two days…Thanks to everyone for taking time out to post such positive feedback…It was my pleasure…Big Love x

Genesis'88 - A Story about an iconic Flyer

The task was to create a new Genesis'88 logo based on the last depiction of an ancient being. Over the last twenty years we actually believed the logo represented the Greek god Zeus although for us it was a spiritual being. I presented the logo to two old skool graffiti heads with the intention of a getting a makeover. I informed them who i thought the image represented and left it with them. Next day they asked whether I'd ever researched The Green Man and instructed me to search via images in Google. I knew it was him soon as i saw it, especially with the beads and leafs in his hair. That for me added another layer of mysticism to the whole project. I was never quite comfortable announcing it was Zeus.

So i left the old skool lads to their own devices only to return the following day and discover they hadn't changed it at all. We all agreed if it was someone with no history then something banging needed to be produced but considering Genesis'88 flyers were always so simple it didn't make sense to complicate matters. Which by all accounts is my personal preference anyway, I'll let them loose on the backdrops but thank to Xenz and buddy for putting the RETRO flyer together. The Genesis'88 logo first graced paper in 1988 and last printed in 1992. It gives us warm fuzzy feelings inside our bellies to re-establish the brand in the old way...like days of old...

Never say never…In my original paperback book Class of 88 i ended the book with a quote which simply read 'would i do it all over again?' My answer and the last words of the book was 'No Fu*king Chance' For years people have ben asking 'did you really mean that?' I'd instantly reply 'i did'. Recently there's been a lot of interest in the eighties and all that happened during that decade. For my generation nothing could be as monumental as Acid House…Our lives were never quite the same again…

No-one in our association has a time machine so unless YOU personally transport your ego back to that uninhibitating sensation of pure empathy, it's just gonna be another warehouse party. I don't have a magic wand i cant transport us to that idillic forum BUT you can, its within you to make it happen in the way it did back in the day. I guess what Im saying is if you plan on coming please suspend your ego at the door and enjoy the freedom of being alive during this unique period in our history.

I've found an amazing warehouse space run by some cool people who have been granted the necessary licenses to stage an event from 10pm-6am. Completely legal venue i have no intention of crashing buildings or stealing electricity like we did back then (Come On!). We do intend on keeping the address secret at this time though if the police want to know then do contact us.

There are not many things in this world i wont have a go at…this is not the time or place to discuss what i wouldn't do…A few years ago (2008) i organised a couple of Acid House Flash Mobs in central London, well actually one was at Liverpool Street Station and the other was in a gallery where an Acid House exhibition was being held. Facebook has many advantages as far as connectivity is concerned but as far as people clicking I'm Attending on Events Page and them actually coming is few and far between. Both flash mobs had hundreds of people Attending but only a few turned out…We still did it though…

Many of us were way too young to remember the first Summer of Love so for us if this was a Summer of Love, it had to be the first. At the height of dance party events taking place all around the country but particularly the M25. No-one could plan where and when they'd end up at any given hour. Various spaces around London were commandeered by folks returning from big parties on the M25. It was a hot summer so instead of going home, it sometimes made sense to follow the crowd. I do love the advancement of technology and am always ready to get stuck into new devices that come onto the market. I'm not a gadget type person i love products with multi-functionality that i can fully utilise in my daily life. These days we carry so many electronic devices that most are opting for all-in-one machines that can do everything but brush your teeth.

Smiley Face History - Good or Evil?

Feelgood corporate logo, acid house icon and txt msg emoticon: one chirpy yellow emblem has kept grinning since the first summer of love. Jon Savage celebrates the life of Smiley

In the official poster for the forthcoming blockbuster, Watchmen, the Smiley badge takes centre stage. The image shows The Comedian being punched out and you see the virgin Smiley a second before it receives the small "five to midnight" blood stain that is the Watchmen logo. As anyone who has read Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons's novel will know, The Comedian's murder sets in train a sequence of events that culminates with the destruction of half of New York and a fragile world peace. In the process, the Watchmen have to confront their own contradictions and fears, their own pasts and, in some cases, their own deaths. This dystopian story features the Smiley as a key symbol; it reappears throughout the book. It works like the homicidal clown, that staple of American horror movies: a great counter-intuitive twist that pits the vapidity of everyday affirmation against an overwhelming sense of doom. The Smiley has travelled far from its early 1960s origins, changing like a constantly mutating virus: from early-70s fad to late-80s acid house culture, from millennial txt option to serial killer signature and ubiquitous emoticon. That's quite a journey for a simple logo that began in kids' TV and corporate morale-building.

The classic Smiley arrived in the early 1970s. Within a perfect circle, there is the simplest, most childlike depiction of a happy face: two vertical, oval eyes and a large, upturned semi-circular mouth. The choice of yellow as a background colour was inspired: it's the colour of spring, the sun, a radiant, unclouded happiness. While the origin of the design is contested, it seems that it first appeared during the early 1960s. In 1963 there was an American children's TV programme called The Funny Company, which featured a crude smiley face as a kids' club logo: it was shown on their caps, in the end titles and the final message, "Keep Smiling".

At the same time, Harvey Ball – a commercial artist in Worcester, Massachusetts – designed a simple Smiley for a local company, State Mutual Life Assurance. Noting the depressing ambience of the town (which is real, believe me, I've stayed there), State Mutual started "a friendship campaign" so that their employees would feel good when they interacted with the public and each other. Ball was paid $45 for 10 minutes work. However, neither he nor the company copyrighted the design, which has left its precise origins open: a Seattle designer called David Stern has also claimed authorship. But the Smiley is based on such an archetypal child's doodle that it could have come out of the ether. What is not disputed is the extent to which the Smiley took off. In September 1970 two brothers based in Philadelphia, Bernard and Murray Spain, came up with the classic Smiley design to sell novelties. Adding the words "have a nice day", the Spains shifted at least 50m Smiley badges in 1972. And that wasn't all. There was an eruption of Smiley ephemera: coffee mugs, tea trays, stationery, earrings, keyrings, bumper stickers, bracelets etc. The fad hit the post-1960s mood: a traumatised American public turning to visual soma in order to forget the war in Vietnam and presidential meltdown.

The Smiley was the perfect feelgood symbol of a moment when 1960s ideas of freedom, hedonism and experimentation hit the American masses. The fad was so mainstream that it bypassed the iconography of post-hippy rock, which, still remaining in thrall to counter-cultural ideas, ignored such mass pablum. It did hit the comics, though. In May 1972, Mad magazine published a Smiley cover – with the distinctive facial features of Alfred E Neuman contained in one of those yellow circles. A failed DC attempt from 1973/4 called Prez: First Teen President featured the first sinister use of the symbol in the figure of Boss Smiley, a Smiley-faced leader of an ultra-rightwing militia. This was prescient. The Smiley presented such a fixed facade of childlike contentment that it was ripe for subversion. Evil was rendered even more sinister by this blank, expressionless face, a trigger horror image like a girl's doll with a broken eye, a prom queen (remember Carrie?) or 1950s style suburbia.

This continued in the late 1970s. If there was one thing that punk railed against, it was false consciousness. The Smiley was an icon worth mutilating, and the cover for the UK 12-inch of the Talking Heads' Psycho Killer picked up on the Taxi Driver vibe that would later inform Watchmen with an image of a distorted Smiley on the putative killer's T-shirt. In 1979, Bob Last and Bruce Slesinger put together a collage of Californian Governor Jerry Brown and a Nuremberg-style rally to illustrate the UK Fast Records release of the Dead Kennedys' California Über Alles. Behind the podium were large red, white and black banners: in place of swastikas were large Smileys. Written during 1985 and published in 1986, Watchmen used the Smiley as a visual metaphor for a narrative that examines guilt, failure, megalomania and compromise with a corrupt power structure. All is not well beneath the idealised superhero surface, as the novel spirals into an existential crisis of betrayal, mass extinction, the transience of human existence. The Smiley is worn by the most corrupt and violent superhero, The Comedian. It even travels to Mars, when Jon and Laurie end up in the midst of a rock formation shaped like a Smiley. (Life followed art, as in early February 2008 it was reported that an orbiting satellite had spotted a big Smiley drawn on the face of the red planet).

Then came the explosion. In February 1988, Bomb The Bass released the first pop reference to Watchmen, using the blood-stained logo on the cover of their hit Beat Dis. Tim Simenon has used the Smiley repeatedly: in the videos for the summer '88 hit Don't Make Me Wait (and for last year's Butterfingers). In the previous month, Danny Rampling had used the Smiley in a flyer for his club Shoom. He'd got the idea from seeing the designer Barnzley at the Wag Club in a shirt covered "in a lot of smiley faces". Embedded into the second "o" in Shoom, the symbol took a few weeks to catch on, but when it did, it swept the country as the logo of acid fashion. As acid house became acieed that year, the Smiley flip-flopped from dream symbol to harbinger of wickedness. Just as the early days of acid were beatific, so the media's initial response to this new youth cult was positive. This changed in the autumn as "smiley culture" was associated with headlines like "Evil Of Ecstasy" and "Shoot These Drug Barons", and the fad quickly subsided.

This negative association continued into the early 1990s. Mutations of the symbol were used by Nirvana (crossed-out eyes, drooling mouth) on their famous "Corporate Rock Whores" T-shirt, as well as in the 1991 Fangoria comic Evil Ernie (angry eyes, mouth with bared teeth). During the last decade, the Smiley has become an acknowledged part of pop culture history. In the US, it's become a shorthand for the high 1970s, referenced in that great touchstone of modern history, Forrest Gump, where Tom Hanks's mud-spattered T-shirt provides the origin for the design. Quite apart from the Watchmen associations, the Smiley is coming back in the UK as part of acid retro fashion, just in time for the 20-year revival. Coincidental to this, it has also been used as a sinister signature – left at murder sites by a US group called The Smiley Face Gang who, it is alleged, have been responsible for around 40 killings. The symbol still oscillates between Heaven and Hell.

As you might expect, the Smiley has also been surrounded by copyright controversies ever since the early 1970s when a Frenchman, Franklin Loufrani registered the trademark as Smiley World in some European countries. Wal-Mart tried to copyright the Smiley in 2006, but lost the case to Smiley World. It has also swept the digital world via emoticons, suggesting various moods from confused to secret-telling, sarcastic to psychotic. (Naturally, the emoticon trademark has already been claimed, by the Russian company Superfone). It may seem weird that such a bland symbol should be used to convey emotion, in such a way that creates as much distance as real empathy. But then there is something powerfully archetypal about an image of a happy face that resembles the sun. Infantilisation or greater communication, joy or horror: the Smiley can encompass everything. Our events were called Genesis, a name that just seemed to come to us, i knew it was right as soon as i wrote it down. Not because of anything remotely connected to religion although when you look at the logo it clearly has religious connotations. That's how much affect outside influences can have on our judgments regardless of whether we're fully aware of it or not. So we found our name then constructed the logo and for the fun of it we threw in some columns. Nothing to do with religion or freemasonry...

I've never actually wished or desired to be a DJ at any point in my life though i have played on some big sets. Admittedly they were my events and completely accidentally i ended up playing at Genesis and i also played the main-room at Pacha (Ibiza'95) on two occasions. I cant mix to save my life but i do remember the soundtrack that drove the generation. Flash-Forward to 2011 and as a favor to my pal Richard of Raindance, I've agreed to play in the Pioneers Room at the next secret Raindance warehouse party...again I've not learned to mix so dont expect it...Raindance have also signed up some of the biggest names of the Acid House era...

The original book was written around 1997 and published in celebration of a decade since the offset of Acid House in 1998. I felt both honoured and privileged to have the book published by Virgin Books. Mainly because i had a gut feeling from the very beginning that Richard Branson's company may well publish the book considering the entire movement was started from a club belonging to him.

Don't ask me how i knew but even though i hadn't written anything beyond two pages i just knew that virgin would publish it. Not because it was a great work of art but because it epitomised a great movement of people that filtered out into the wider world from gay club Heaven's. This was a story fit for the Virgin empire. Most professional authors need only submit a synopsis of their book to a publisher who then has a period of three months to decide whether the book can slot into their marketing machine without much effort.

Those days everyone wrote on computers but for me i needed to feel the attachment of pen against paper and so wrote the entire book out in ink before going anywhere near a computer. Not that i had a computer at that time, i'd been traveling around Australia until i hastily left. I didn't know what i was going to do next. Meanwhile certain magazines published Acid House History specials and Genesis were never mentioned yet we were there since 1988. I knew what we'd been through during that period and to think that we were being ignored and companies that came after us were getting all the praise. That really used to piss me off and most of the time you could tell the person doing the writing wasn't even there.

My Genesis partners didn't care much as they were earning big money and moved on long ago. Acid House had changed me from the core outwards and i wanted the public to understand what we were doing but more so i wanted the people that came to events like Genesis to realise how far promoters went in pursuit of what we regarded as freedom. We each had a different story to tell and i personally couldn't articulate the way anyone else felt about Acid House. That really extends to my Genesis partners as well, i remember how we felt at certain times but during the course of writing the book i didn't discuss any of the ideas with the lads i just got on with it. Writing from memory brought up much of my past and made me question everything i did and the motivation for doing it. This process helped me to grow spirituality as i came to understand myself much more due to writing about Acid House.

When i finished writing the book i contacted Virgin Books but didn't get past the main reception as she seemed to know that Virgin wouldn't be interested in a book about MDMA. She didn't even get to hear the title or my name. I just went back home and started doing rewrites for a few months before contacting Virgin for the second time. Again didn't get past the front desk and no names. I still knew it would be published by Virgin, call it a higher-self and whatever you may, i was determined that Virgin would become its home. I went back to the drawing room and continued fine tuning for a another few months until finally calling them for the third time. I was in luck, the receptionist asked me to hold the line! The cheerful sound of Virgin's newest Senior Music Editor came online and sounded quiet excited about the concept. He promised to have an answer for me within days if i got it there ASAP. It was Ian Gittins first commission at Virgin and they went all out to make it a success…

Within what seemed like a short time the book went out of print and to my surprise received overnight cult-status. I nearly fell off my chair when i noticed that readers were selling secondhand copies of my book for hundreds of pounds on Amazon. I kept a close eye on amazon and watched the price reach £500 at one stage. Tis was a great feeling i must say regardless of the fact that i'd have to sell a shitload of books to receive that royalty through book sales.

So its given me great pleasure to rewrite and add new content to the Special Edition of Class of 88 - The True Acid House Experience which is available via Kindle in advance of the paperback book which will be published either later this year or early next year…

Acid House on National Geographic (march 2011)

Wayne Anthony (well a photo and our (Andrew Pritchard, Keith B) parties anyway) on National Geographic, cool, ok it wasn't because i discovered an unknown tribe in the thick jungles of Africa or South America and if i were an explorer of this elk then Im sure i'd be disappointed. Yes there were some misleading statements made on the documentary such as the ICF (West Ham football hooligans) were running our security when in fact only three members of the entire security team ever fought for West Ham. They ran their own warehouse parties. Carlton Leach was one such individual who i should also point out, wasn't under the guise of ICF. They were independent hard men from the shady pubs of London's East End who commanded respect from most of their peers. Originally this was orchestrated by another person who shall remain nameless and if not for this person my two partners and i wouldn't have got out without a few stitches. The east end had to be the obvious choice for our security otherwise an outside firm ran the risk of going against a local firm and thats always going to be messy.

As top policeman Kenneth Tappenden points out, bank robberies in London went down to zero at the time of Acid House. Now that shows two things 1. Bank Robbers put down their weapons and got right on one 2. They shifted attention to the loved-up water guzzling promoters of Acid House or 3. All of the Above.

Kenneth Tappenden also says that he wished he had us as his lieutenant and the military couldn't move people as quick as we did. Fairplay to Kenneth as he was head of the Police Pay Party Unit, the very department set up to stop us...

My partners Andrew, Keith and I were all 22 years old, totally captivated by Acid House and everything it had to offer. This area of our lives was the most depressing but we did have a choice. Other than one occasion when we were attacked by some doormen, our security NEVER HURT ANYONE AT GENESIS and it should also be noted that this wasn't New Jack City, where teams of armed guards stood over the dancefloor. Our security were very discreet and polite to everyone so no-one had a clue what was happening behind the scenes until my book Class of 88.

A New Wave Of British Invaders?  London's Music Press Gushes Over The Sensation In Manchester,  England: Trendy New Working-Class Bands. But Across The Atlantic, Listeners Are Less Than Taken With The Hype.

Is the British pop-music scene driven by fads rather than fresh sounds?

It seemed that way this summer, as highly touted bands such as Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, which made their reputations playing the all-night Manchester dance parties known as "raves," attempted to translate their United Kingdom success into a full-fledged invasion of the States. London's weekly music papers Melody Maker and New Musical Express rhapsodized over the bands' singles and covered just about every performance as if it were breaking news. One New Musical Express editor, Danny Kelly, called the Manchester sound "the most important music since punk." The relentless praise was enough to prod even the international edition of Newsweek into action: Its July 23 cover story "Madchester" breathlessly trumpeted a new golden age of British pop. Such enthusiasm was not to be found on this side of the Atlantic, however. Critics who attended dates on Happy Mondays' much-ballyhooed second American tour in July reported that the group "didn't translate" musically.

One U.S. recording industry executive said England's talent pool had gone dry: "Artist development has slowed to a halt in the U.K.," said Irving Azoff, president of Giant Records, at July's New Music Seminar in New York. Referring to scouting reports, he hinted that the scene might not merit further investigation, and added, "More listeners seem to be saying, 'If you don't feed our heads, we're going to stop tapping our toes pretty soon.' " As with previous musical "invasions," the Manchester boom owes much to Britain's trend-obsessed youth - and insatiable music press. The scene has been blown out of proportion, its bands hailed as messiahs by journalists eager to lay claim to the next phenomenon. What really was happening in Manchester was exciting enough: fans turning out by the thousands to catch the leading bands or any of a number of up-and- coming attractions. In this industrial town, music remains one of the few ways to avoid a dead-end factory job, or, if you're stuck in one, to forget about it.

Groups from the area have slowly begun to penetrate U.S. consciousness - Stone Roses reached the top of alternative-music charts with "Fool's Gold" last year. But it's too soon to know if the leading Manchester bands - the Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets, whose U.S. debut was released by Elektra last week - are Frankie Goes to Hollywood meteors, or the first examples of a bold regional style that will take over the world the way the Beatles and the Mersey Beat did. "The British music press likes to do that every so often, find these little scenes that they think they discover," said Anthony Boggiano, manager of Inspiral Carpets and its Cow Records label. "By the time they started writing about these (Manchester) bands, they were already releasing singles and playing to 1,000 or 2,000 people a night. They had already been proven, in a sense, and were capable of drawing a crowd."

Boggiano, who this year counseled Inspiral Carpets to turn down the British Broadcasting Corp.'s request to do an animated series based on the irreverently retro group, acknowledges that constant exposure in the United Kingdom helped the Carpets develop a loyal fan base, essential in the cutthroat British pop market. But to make too much of their popularity at home could be fatal overseas. "The hype got over (to America) before the bands got over there," Boggiano said from his office in Manchester. Boggiano says he worries that the Carpets' eponymous debut, an anthology of singles and tracks from British EPs, is likely to suffer from too much preliminary publicity. "People in the U.S. are naturally very distrustful of all that attention. What's more, there's no way a band can live up to those expectations."

The current Manchester bands have plenty of company in pop history books. England's early rock days of the '60s saw the Tottingham Sound, represented by the squeaky clean, mushy Dave Clark Five. In addition to the Beatles, exponents of the Liverpool scene included the Searchers, Gerry and the Pacemakers and Cilla Black. Birmingham boasted such acts as Spencer Davis and the Moody Blues. And the light and polite pop of the Hollies, Freddie and the Dreamers, and Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders put Manchester on the map.

During the punk period that began in 1977 and the years that followed, Manchester's Buzzcocks, the Smiths and Joy Division (and its successor, New Order) shared a dour, mopey world view and a penchant for provocation. Punk in Manchester was more than a fashion statement; it was a political stance. As guitarist Johnny Marr of the Smiths told one reporter, "Everybody took it seriously. The punks were singing songs about being unemployed, and in Manchester that really meant something."

Like their musical forebears, Manchester's current bands come from working- class backgrounds and share an affection for '60s psychedelia, modern dance music and Northern Soul (Simply Red is a leading exporter of this Manchester oddity, based on American soul from Memphis to Motown). In this northwest England port city 35 miles east of Liverpool, music and dancing represent the '60s ideal of shared experience. Tom Hingley, 22, lead vocalist for Inspiral Carpets, says Manchester audiences and musicians are receptive to any number of different sounds.

"None of (the region's) bands considered themselves definitive Manchester bands," Hingley said. "We helped the scene by adding some humor to it, and the scene helped us by giving us a shot outside of our home town. But we don't depend on that - the bands rise and fall by the music." The Manchester craze started at the Hacienda, a club opened in 1982 by Factory Records president Tony Wilson, who was responsible for signing New Order. Offering high-energy dance music including acid house and (occasionally) live bands, the club became the site of all-night raves - dances fueled by the drug Ecstasy, an amphetamine variant. "If there is any idea at all (behind the raves)," Wilson told Newsweek, ''it is about community and collective strength. There is democracy in dancing." As they became more popular, the raves spawned a look: bell-bottom pants and baggy shirts of primary colors. They also required more bands to keep the crowds in constant motion. The parties, which have spread throughout Europe, became a proving ground of sorts, a place where bands could test their ability to enchant - and, more important, hold - a crowd.

Most Manchester bands have a danceable, though hardly bubbly, sound that combines the repetition of house music with the smeared guitar-and-organ strains of '60s psychedelia and the cold calculation of techno-pop. Like the physical surroundings, Manchester's music is bleak, dank, industrial. Yet it's also obsessed with a joyous release of tension, and a belief in the power of the dance floor as at least a temporary antidepressant. There are important differences among the bands. Happy Mondays uses drum machines to reinforce downcast, mechanistic themes; its recent single "Kinky Afro" finds the band paraphrasing LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade" as a chorus. Stone Roses concentrates less on dance-pop, more on folk. A Roses sound- alike, the Charlatans UK, brings weighty introspection to its music. And the instrumental outfit 808 State creates mood pieces that contain floating melodies and driving, trance-inducing rhythms. Inspiral Carpets, perhaps the most musically sophisticated of the bunch, engages in outright '60s revivalism on "Move," "Weakness" and other selections from the U.S. debut. Sometimes this retrospection is in the margin; other times - when, say, the band goes unashamedly for a Doors sound - it is impossible to miss.

There is even a second wave of Manchester bands, largely a result of corporate attempts to jump on the bandwagon. After Stone Roses became huge in England, one major record company, Phonogram, sent six representatives to Manchester with orders not to return until they had signed a band. The result: a crop of bands such as James and Adamski that are mildly interesting but make the kind of derivative music that needs the hype of a "scene" if it's going to sell.

When the record companies "couldn't get the bands that had been active for years and were ready, they signed anything," said Inspiral Carpet's Boggiano. Boggiano believes that saturation coverage in the British music trades contributed to the labels' feeding frenzy, and Stuart Bailey, who edits the album-review section of New Musical Express, concurs. "The press didn't create it, but probably helped keep things moving," said Bailey. "It's like the Mersey Beat - at the end of the day it's only the Beatles we remember; everything else is an ephemeral thing." Bailey says comprehensive coverage of the Manchester scene has been good for business. "Readership was down through most of the '80s and suddenly it's up again," he said. "We really got caught up in the moody, self-indulgent- artist pose that was part of the '80s, and this is a breath of fresh air."

I met Kris back in 1999, he'd just completed a book about Ibiza and very unhappy. The crutch of his sadness was the fact that most of the book was dedicated to Kris and his girlfriend of the time. By the time the book cam out they'd unfortunately split up and Kris was on a mission of self destruction. Not to say he hasn't been there before, Kris is actually more like a rockstar than a journalist, everything about him says 'i can stay up for five days and still play the shit out of this guitar, bring in the new girls' Kris has been there seen it and done it... He came to watch me do a book reading and got so pissed beforehand he spent the rest of the night on his back... That said the man knows his music history and at some point created the map you see below... No doubt Kris is happy as ever today...

Kris Needs (born 2 July 1954) is a British journalist and author, primarily known for his writings on the music scene from the 1970s onwards. He became editor of ZigZag Magazine in August 1977, at the relatively young age of 23, and has written biographies of numerous rock and dance stars including Primal Scream, Joe Strummer and Keith Richards. In the late 1970s he fronted a band 'The Vice Creams',[1] appearing in John Otway's Aylesbury Market Square free concert. He started in journalism, while living in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, with the Thame Gazette, a weekly newspaper in Oxfordshire. Needs and Wonder Schneider formed the band Secret Knowledge and released the 1992 club hit "Sugar Daddy" on the Sabres of Paradise label. The track also appeared on their 1996 electronic album So Hard on Deconstruction Records; Needs and Schneider wrote all the material, occasionally with artists such as Ashley Beedle and Jah Wobble...

Class of 88 - Amazon Traders

Hey folks, i know i've spoken about secondhand books somewhere else on my blog but this weekend i found one of the most expensive editions yet on Amazon ($437) . I know someone in the UK paid £500 from E-Bay once and this i know because one of my cousins was in a pub and his pal came in with the £500 copy. Cuz called immediately thinking something fishy was going on but it was legit. I don't receive any royalties on the secondhand copies though i do commend the sellers for getting so much cash for a book and not some history book or rare fiction book but my book Class of 88. So Im proud of it really. Many well written books were published on Acid House, most of which can be acquired on Amazon for less than £10. Im not knocking the books, why would i, they mention my name and Genesis. My name is mentioned in no less than 18 books at the last count. Amazing, Im honored... I still find it quite unbelievable as i never written more than two pages since school.

You know what irritates me though and please tell me that Im wrong...

I've contacted numerous vendors on amazon selling my book to congratulate them on earning some vast sums on my book and I wish them luck, no malice, pure love. You know not one of them has ever answered my message, not one of them, how mad is that? I even found one chap on E-Bay selling the PDF of Class of 88 for £3 when i was giving it away FREE and allowed everyone else to list the download on their sites. E-Bay did move fast and swift though, shut the chap down immediately. I wasnt expecting them to do that but i still couldn't allow him to sell that free PDF.

What's even worse than all that is the fact that selling books on Amazon is more profitable than actually writing books. If you join one of their affiliate programs you could sell my book Class of 88 and receive a commission greater than my royalty for writing it. So yes amazon is great for buying books but in reality there are also hanging writers...

When Class of 88 (updated) is re-released next year I'll be offering anyone with the original book to send back to me and i'll send them a signed updated new edition...

Acid House Flash Mob - Wayne Anthony Interview

We did some random Acid House flash-mobs a couple years ago and was contacted by someone writing a paper on this urban activity. He sent some questions which i answered and thought i'd include them here...

1) In what ways have you been involved in "flashmobbing" or similar public interruptions?

Public interruptions? Its all a matter of wordplay. On the one side they call it public interruptions while on other-side they'd probably call it a matter of necessity. We didn't make the rules nor did we have any involvement in their creation, and so as society goes about its daily routine, some rules stand out as pointless acts of control. After all, Admiralty Law has no place on land or in the domain of human beings. Have i been involved in public interruptions? No. I've facilitated a desire to live outside the construct of regulations, terms and conditions enforced by captains of the high seas. Public interruptions are nothing more than human beings expressing a deep urge to be free.

I was one of the pioneers of Acid House and what was later deemed by the media as the rave scene. So i've been involved in countless acts of random activities. I was also at the very blunt end of governmental disapproval during this period so have much experience in this field. Acid House defines an entire generation of people that stood up for something they believed in. It was against the rules but absolutely necessary for the growth of the country. At times such as that the rules have no bearing on the human condition and something should be done to change it.

2) What were your reasons for doing so, and to what extent were your objectives achieved? Was it pure entertainment or were there deeper, artistic and philosophical reasons?

First and foremost its completely about entertainment, a break from the norm, an opportunity to do something you wouldn't normally dream of doing. That's what its about random acts of performance conducted by strangers in very public locations. I didn't personally set out to create any form of disruption this has and will always be about the movement of people, ideas and perceptions. This is measured by sheer numbers on the specified day of event and the feedback received byway of the marketing campaign.

3) What was the relevance of the location?

Flashmobbing is mainly about location, the more central the better. People attending still have to get home in a timely fashion. So its important for access to public transport to help get the people on their way. We also want to create maximum impact and where better a place such as Liverpool Street Station.

4) What means of communication did you utilise?

In an age of electronic communication we optimise all forms of viral marketing including real world and online campaigns. We create videos, graphic flyers, online groups / communities, message forums and all new technologies on release.

5) Are your events "interruptive" in that they significantly change a particular urban space for a certain amount of time?

I don't care for the word interruptive as on given day my life is 'interrupted' by things out of my control and that's the point, your dealing with a generation of people that deep down wish to be free in every way possible. So yes we stand in mass on a space allocated to us by sheer proxy of being human. No laws, regulations, terms or conditions apply.

6) What is your name and occupation, and could you please indicate as to whether you are happy to be named in the paper or if you would prefer to remain anonymous?

I am Freeman, a human being, a pioneer, a spiritual provocateur, a visionary and humanist with deep felt love and conviction for all humans and lifeforms in the universe. I am you, they are us and we are them...

7) Please detail any additional information which you may wish to share: your thoughts, experiences and opinions about flashmobbing and public performance in general.

Wherever you find humans you'll find that urge to breakaway from control. Flashobbing provides an arena for complete strangers to shed their anonymity for a short period of time that allows the burden of distrust to evaporate before your very eyes. We all want to trust, love and be loved. Events of this nature temporarily suspends the preconditioning of humanity allowing for that much needed mass empathy. No matter where in the world you are right now when reading these answers. You too have that desire to break away from what you think you have to do in order to survive on this great planet. Just one memory can last a lifetime. So what do you have planned for tomorrow?

Impossible Oddities: The Story of WAU! Mr Modo

W.A.U!. Mr Modo was the product of likeminded music freaks and lifelong friends Youth and Dr Alex Paterson setting out to celebrate and play their part in the acid house revolution sweeping the UK in the late 80s. In the process, they became two of the most well-known and lastingly influential names to emerge from the whole movement, while the label epitomises the innocence and questing spirit of the era. When Youth played bass in apocalyptic post-punk band Killing Joke, Alex was a roadie, prone to leaping onstage and singing Stooges songs in the encores. When Youth left the Joke, the pair found their musical outlooks swiveled by tapes of New York’s dance music radio stations and their jaw-dropping mastermixes.

‘We wanted to form a label after spending 1986-87 listening to the likes of Tony Humphries’ adds Alex. The first Orb single, recorded at KLF’s Transcentral squat HQ, was a homage to KISS FM., called The Kiss EP. Meanwhile Alex and Youth started demoing a song they called ‘Little Fluffy Clouds’ [a never-before heard version which opens this compilation]. After hooking up with former Killing Joke road manager Adam Morris [aka Mr Modo], the label became known as W.A.U!. Mr Modo.

The music started flowing freely as names including STP Twentythree [Alex and Jimmy], Insync, Paradise X and Lyndsey Holloday recorded there. ‘We set about sampling our record collections and creating new music with a new vocabulary,’ recalls Youth. ‘This extended further with the Orb and KLF, where Alex's genius was soon realised by his amazing sound collage abilities, where we practically got rid of all musicians and created entire tracks from collaging other records.’ The two CDs also feature the cream of the early W.A.U. releases; a stellar collection of half-forgotten names from the acid house archives [several featuring Alex and Youth], including STP Twentythree, Eternity, Discotec 2000, Delkom, Johnson Dean, U.N.C.L.E., Paradise X, Sun Electric, Indica All Stars, Mystic Knights, Insync, Sound Iration and Zoe, with ’Sunshine On A Rainy Day’, one of the label’s biggest hits.

The recordings here can now be considered the acid house equivalent of Alan Lomax’s field blues recordings or compilations of DIY bedroom punk; snapshots of seminal moments in musical history. In many ways, acid house was like punk rock all over again; like that movement, Youth and Alex were again in the thick of it but soon out front, leaders of the field within a very short time. This is where it all started. To accompany this celebration of the label, this must-have, collectors package includes a fold out scrap book poster of press cuttings from the time unearthed from Paterson’s personal archive as well as iconic cover art from Jimmy Cauty.

Class of 88 - Amazon Best Sellers List

In the last few years I've been monitoring secondhand sales of the original Class of 88 paperback book and I'm shocked, delighted and gutted i didn't get a royalty on £450 that was once paid on amazon.com. There's a huge difference in prices between the two sites as sometimes on amazon.co.uk prices can start at £10 and max out at £450. I almost fell over when i saw the £450 but over on amazon.com the standard price for the book is $350.

I should point out that authors don't receive any royalties on secondhand books and i think its great that someone can read my book and actually earn 500 times the cover price. What i find somewhat disturbing is the fact I've sent many of these sellers a private message congratulating them on the fact they get so much money on this title. I'm polite, courteous and gentle with my words but not one of them have ever replied to my message.

Two American companies in particular are obviously sourcing the copies wherever they can and putting them up for over $300 dollars each time. These companies have been consistent throughout the time I've been paying attention and must have sold easy a dozen copies each. In effect I've made them a few quid and they wont even reply to my message…

When the new Special Edition Class of 88 comes out in shops next year I'll be swapping brand new signed editions for original copies…

I did a little investigating on the book on amazon and found some other facts that Im also quite proud of. Taking into consideration that the book hasn't been in print for eight years I think the stats speak for themselves...

Farley Jackmaster Funk is a living legend, a man who kept pushing the boundaries of the musical experience and the dancefloor. Originator, innovator, ambassador, he is at the core of the house revoloution and a spellbinding influence on other giants of the movement. The man who played such a seminal role in the whole concept of house, the man who broke the UK and opened us up to the whole journey took us on a ride through his memories and insights.

What was the vibe like in the Hot Mix 5 and how did the Hot Mix 5 set the flavor for mid 80’s Chicago?

Incredible. It was actually pretty hard to take in, because you didn’t even realize that you were creating a whole new genre of music and every day was like Christmas. The Hot Mix 5 set the whole tone for everything that happened after us in house music because it was radio, and whatever it was that we did individually in clubs paled next to what we were doing with the radio. I mean we had over 3 million listeners every Friday and every Saturday and as far as the music went, we didn’t really have to break house per se as if there was nothing comparable before, because disco was there and house is an extension of disco, only electronic. For me the beats were the same and it was almost like making electro house in that the house was already there and it was about taking it electronic. But suddenly it had a name and that made it easier to break it as a new style.

And I tell you what, we used to play a lot of Euro stuff and what was coming out of Europe really didn’t get enough credit because some of the music that they were making in the early 80’s was around before we started our style back in Chicago. The same goes for Prelude Records too who were honing their own electronic sound at the beginning of the 80’s, and those guys really didn’t get categorized or credited into the genre until later when people actually started looking back and naming those records house once house had really come into its own.

How big a part did gospel play in the soul of early house?

Well for one thing, a lot of the singers actually came from church, as they did in disco and almost every other musical style, because people who went to church had grown up learning and honing these amazing vocal skills. The dances too were very reminiscent of being back in church – we used the 2 step and clapped our hands on the dancefloor in the same way that we used to in church. Think about it – house – God’s house – there was a whole lot of stuff that we didn’t really click when we were naming things, because we were just coming up with them out of nowhere, that so many of them were actually parodies of our experiences in church. Think about a pastor who preaches to a congregation – a DJ was basically preaching musically to a club congregation, and even the mirrorball hanging from the ceiling was an almost identical symbol to a cross hanging in the middle of church

How did Aw Shucks go down in the clubs when it first came out?

Aw Shucks went down beautifully because I had ripped the bassline from a song called Beat the Street by Sharon Reed, so the foundation of the song as already familiar to people and the Aw Shucks of course came from Let No Man Put Asunder. I just took two ideas and put them together, because don’t forget, I wasn’t a musician in the early 80’s so what I would do was to basically remix or reshape other people’s music, set it to the house beat and name it house music! Even the record label I had at that time was called House Records, and everything I was doing was coined or branded house to really identify it and help push the genre.

That’s basically where Love Can’t Turn Around Came from too, taking the deep soul vocals of Issac Hayes and working it into a house groove. Exactly. That was an original composition but in the same way that rappers used to take James Brown’s beats and then rap over them and in fact what the whole essence of dance music was all about – ripping old records, updating them, giving them a new beat and then coining a term for the style like ‘house’. In the early 80’s, a lot of the Brit stuff that came out was generated in the same way, that’s what ‘mash ups’ were. They would take accapellas, because the kind of singers they were looking to use weren’t really around in Britain – it was much more of an American sound, but they would then lay other music under the accapellas and create mash ups.

Love Cant turn Around was huge in the UK. Was the UK even on your radar before that track had such soaring success?

All I knew was ‘London Bridge is falling down, falling down, My Fair Lady’ (note from editor – that was the Jackmaster on vocals down the phone!) before Love Can’t Turn Around happened. I was blessed to make that record, blessed to meet people that I would never have thought of meeting and all through the music of the music. That was a total thrill because it was a whole other world for me and everyone else who had the chance to come to England and a really special opportunity for us to get together and learn about each other’s culture. And all through the music. I tell you – still to this day it is awesome. At that time, I was big in England and even more famous in Chicago, and it was an amazing experience to be bi coastal in the States, international, and just travelling all over the place with this new idea, this new style that I was basically representing and promoting. Pretty hard to take it all in actually. So I’m arriving in London and the first thing I want to see for real is the black taxi after watching The Saint and Simon Templar back home. Being a boy, cars were my thing and I was fascinated by the different vehicles, even down to you guys driving on the opposite side of the road. That was the kind of thing that drove us, going back to Chicago and telling these stories and seeing everyone sat there going ‘Get outta here man – you’re full of it’ And then next thing you know, they’re making records too, and they’re getting their own chance to go over there and then come back and spread the word even further. I think house music did wonders for the sightseeing business because you had all these guys heading over from Chicago, just so excited to be sat on a plane off to see a different country and experience another culture...

From his time with the Funk Brothers drumming up the rhythms for some of the all time classics, to his commercial smashes, to his role in bringing hip hop into house music, Tyree Cooper was at the forefront of the house revolution. His contribution to hip house widened the appeal of house music, laid house as a template for a kaleidoscope of musical styles, and brought the urban vibe of hip hip hop firmly into the house. Old School legend Tyree spoke to us...

What was it like for black Americans in Chicago during the mid 1980s?

Being black and growing up in America, you don't have to think about anything else outside of your surroundings. You’re so oppressed but don't know it, you think you have freedom but you don’t. And you try to do what you do. Anytime you have an oppressed society something creative is gonna come out of it, i don't care what it is but something groundbreaking is gonna come out of it. So for us as far as House music was concerned, we didn't think that anyone outside of Chicago would be listening.

So when did the spark become a flame?

When Jesse (Saunders) starting doing it, he wanted to become a bigger DJ, so he started making records. When he did it, Farley (Jackmaster Funk) said ‘Screw’ that if he can do it, i can do it to. Farley stripped it down even more. Jesse had the music side and on the other-side you had House but it was more of a beat track. The Jack tracks for the Jacking music, so we had House and we had Jack. Depending on the kind of person you were that’s the kind of music you listened to. So the preppy people went to House Parties because they’d play a little disco. It was cleaner they had polo shirts, blue jeans, preppy loafers. Just straight up college prep, the whole party.

Some of these people were fashion designers and were designing clothes for rappers back in the day. Outside of Dapper Dan and his jogging suits, I’m talking parachute prints for the ages, man, it looked like a fashion show in a House Party. When you went to the Jacking Party or a Beat Party on the Westside or you went to the hood parties, it was only Beat music, that's when the party started. When I went to London that was the side I grew closer to because nobody was dressing up, they dressing like fuck that, I’m in this party, I’m going on.

In Chicago it was always the High School Parties those were the parties. Every famous DJ that you can think of from Chicago back in the day, trust me, he got known from the High School Parties. It was all focused on the High School kids because that youth movement at the time, hip hop and house, well in Detroit it was Techno and that was closer to Miami Bass meets Kraftwerk, it so was futuristic and if you lived in Detroit you got it. They had House too because of Ken Collier. So this whole black youth movement was bubbling and by 1985 Farley said ‘Im going to London’ I was like what you gonna do, DJ? he says ‘Yeah’. I’m like ‘They listen to House in London?’

Our experience of London was the language, Benny Hill and only white people. If you were shrewd enough and watched international TV, you might find Desmond’s (black tv show from 1970s) which came on PBS. Desmond was my shit, Pork Pie, man I loved Desmond’s. Benny Hill and James Bond if you got deep, we didn't even think about The Saint. I’m no college professor but I liked knowledge and more so than my peers. Growing up in the hood you see your friend or someone you know on the corner selling drugs or somebody stealing cars or someone Breaking and Entering or doing all kind of nonsense. I said to myself as a kid, I can’t do this shit, so I played basketball until I found House music, that was my escape. Basketball saved my life, I mean it really saved my life. I wanted to be in the NBA that was my dream. I could play and most of the people I played with played in the NBA but at 19 I started thinking about my height, i thought yeah, I could play in Europe, back then you needed the grades it wasn't as easy as it is now.

My best friend Hugo was a DJ so he was taking me to these House Parties and stuff, saying he wanted me to check Farley (Jackmaster Funk). I was blown away by his DJing, for one there was women from end to end and not like girls in the hood.. I was like OK, what I gotta do to be part of this. First you get into the music and then you get into the scene and vibe. So i said to Farley ‘Yeah I know how to DJ’ he laughed at me saying ‘You don't know how to DJ’ ‘I’m like yeah I do’ Farley says ‘OK, come by the crib’ I went by his house he had two decks and a mixer. I said ‘go ahead do your thing’ he did it and I said ‘Alright, you gotta teach me how to do that shit’. He said ‘Nah, I cant teach you this it took me five years to learn how to do this’. So me being the person I am, if you tell me no and I like it, I'm gonna find a way to do it. Get good and then try to be better than you, not go against you, just better.

For me it was like basketball, if you score 20 on me today, tomorrow if you score 2 points on me you’re good. After a while another friend of mine named Leonard Remix Roy and another guy Alto Hines and his brother James Hines who had a sound system in the neighborhood, gave birth to me and Mike Dunn. The times they heard me trying to DJ in that basement, day and night. Until one day they say ‘You doing a party on your own, do you know what your doing? You need speakers? ‘ Then they heard me and Mike Dunn play and said ‘Wow’. Mike Dunn is the only DJ partner I’ve ever had. When we got together to DJ it was like me and Mike against the world. We both like the same music but in different ways, Mike liked to tape records and edit, so I was like ‘Mike edits’ They sang like Frankie’s but were cleaner, it was for us. One of the promoters that gave birth to so many DJs was Marvin Terry, he threw some of the biggest parties on the planet.

The comparison with England is that you had warehouse spaces we didn't have those spaces, we had hotel lobbies or hotel halls. We hire Hotel Congress or Hilton Hotel for two thousand bucks. It didn't matter we were charging ten bucks and 2,500 kids would come to the party. Every-time you threw a party downtown everybody came, matter of fact, if you threw a party anywhere in Chicago and it wasn't crowed, you really did something wrong. Especially if you were one of those DJs like Ferris Thomas, Andre Hachet, Steve Hurley or Mike Dunn and we’re not talking radio DJs because every-time they were on a flyer it packed the party every-time.

Its not often your given a chance to have a personal one to one with some of the heroes we grow up respecting. Some of you may already know I have an online magazine which i produce alongside one of the Spiral Tribe organisers Siruis23. Our magazine is mainly geared for street art graffiti but as well traveled lads our interests are pretty broad and this is reflected in the many other aspects of life also presented in the magazine. We decided to dedicate an entire issue to Acid House because of its importance in the history of Great Britain. Siruis23 and I took great pleasure in interviewing the heroes of the late eighties so without further delay we present the first in a series of excerpts taken from LSD Magazine BE SURE TO JOIN OUR NEW FACEBOOK PAGE Classof88....

And it all started here....Pure legend, Jesse Saunders made the first ever house record in 1984 and has never looked back, throwing all his energy, love and positivity into the movement he played such a seminal role in creating. DJ, sublime innovator, driving, force, inspirational ambassador and sparkling ball of energy, Jesse spoke to us -

What were your early influences both musically and personally and how did they lead to house music?

I took all kinds of instrument lessons from the early age of 5…from trumpet to piano and recorder (flute) to drums. My favorite tunes were anything with a heart and soul-from classic rock to R&B, I loved the melodies and the grooves! That’s what led to the foundation of House Music! My favorite groups and influences were Earth Wind & Fire, Heatwave, Fleetwood Mac, America, The Beatles, Chicago, Human League, The Bangles and Bob Marley!

What does DJing mean to you?

DJing is an ART! You don’t just learn how to beat match-Anyone can do that! You have to understand and read your crowd and immediately interpret where you want and need to take them…through the highs and lows and buildups. You can’t just pound them over the head with hard beats, or lull them to sleep with soft beats. It should be a musical journey through all kinds of emotions and sounds. There’s no better high than seeing a crowd react and anticipate to your every move.

What was the creative atmosphere like in early 80’s Chicago?

In the early 80s there wasn’t much of a creative atmosphere except for New Wave. My friend and I used to go to The Exit and Neo’s which were underground clubs for the New Wave bands. I was playing at the Playground and would always play a NEW Wave set mixed in with Disco Classics and Electro tracks coming from Europe. It wasn’t until I decided to make ON & ON that things started heating up creatively. ON & ON was released in January of 1984 to overwhelming response. Then other DJs saw what I was doing and tried to copy it. The 1st DJ I made a record for was Farley. He actually tried to sing on it! LOL.

Where did the beats and the vibe for On and On come from?

I made the beats on my Roland TR-808 and played all the instruments and effects on a Poly 61. The bass-line came from a Roland TB-303. I recorded it all on a Tascam 4 track cassette recorder in my bedroom.

Were you aware of what was being created back in 1984 – could you even have dreamt of the possibilities.

Of course not! How could I? I just wanted to make a record. I still to this day cannot believe the magnitude of what I created.

What was it about house music that made it a medium for so many different styles and grooves?

It’s that 4 on the floor pounding beat that gets into your soul! You can put anything musically on top and you still have the drive!

Can you give us an insight into the soul and the power of house music?

House is a feeling. If you can’t feel it, you don’t understand, but when you do, it stays with you for life!

What did the Immense commercial success of Love Cant Turn Around with Farley mean for the direction of house music?

The funny thing about that is it wasn’t Farley that made Love Can’t Turn Around! It was Darryl Pandy’s vocals and my production! I remember touring in the UK in 1986 and while DJing at the Virgin Megastore I see the video come up on the TV. I was like WHAT THE FUCK????? I had no idea there was a video. They did all of that behind my back. Our agreement was that the record was released as Farley Jackmaster Funk & Jesse Saunders. So it’s still dumbfounds me that Farley gets all the credit, but I get all the Publishing so no worries! LOL.

How do you feel about the intense cultural shift house created – what was it that made so many people loving and free?

It’s like Woodstock in 1969. I have to thank the Brits for that feeling cuz you guys started the Rave culture which was based on love, sex and drugs (we could have left the drugs out, but oh well…)! People want to feel good, dance and love each other. It’s a natural human characteristic. House provides the love and freedom in the music for all!

I went down with Tony (Sunrise) one night and he ended up swinging from some cables somewhere and hurting himself (never felt til next day then ouuccchhh)...

Turner Prize Winner 2004 - Acid House

Jeremy Deller won the Turner Prize for a series of Power Point images...One of the images was based on Acid House...

'He worried for "about a day", and then accepted the nomination. "Plenty of people turn it down, but I felt if I didn't do it I'd spend the rest of my life wondering what would have happened." He rented a studio, for the first time - "I thought I needed to look a bit more serious " - and, aware that the other nominees were showing film works in "dark rooms", decided to have his part of the exhibition "light and airy and open", with lots of books and discussion. Deller's face lights up when he recalls the public reaction to his work at the show. "Whenever I went in there, the number of people was amazing and they were really paying attention. It blew me away, people's hunger to see what I'd done."

In the press coverage that followed his win, however, Deller became the Turner Winner Who Could Not Paint Or Draw. "The first question I was asked was, 'Is the video camera the new pencil?'" he says. Art teachers at his old school were wheeled out to attest to his lack of talent (in fact, he did not study art at O-level). Even so, he says, the long-term effects of winning the prize have been positive. Deller tends not to sell much of his work - after all, his art, being largely project-based, is not terribly commercial - but he has found the Turner prize tag a useful way of getting publicity for his perhaps more eccentric projects.

As for the money, "I put it all in premium bonds. And it's still there."'It had never occurred to Jeremy Deller that Memory Bucket - "a tiny film in a filler show at the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford which hardly anyone had seen" - might be in the running for the Turner prize, and his initial reaction to being shortlisted was doubt. Deller deals in collaborative social projects (a recent piece is a London Underground map containing a tribute to its longest-serving employee): would a substantial gallery space show his work to its best advantage?' DJ Alfredo Interview - ID Magazine 1990

DJ Alfredo kicked started the first chapter of the Acid House journey. Long before the Acid House squelches bellowed from Amnesia's speakers Alfredo championed the sound of the Balearic's. Given its title you'd be forgiven for expecting a pure Spanish sound but like R&B for example this genre has shaped-shifted into various incarnations. In 1987 Balearic appeared to define a total medley of music from all walks of life. As Acid House developed it became more stylised though at the beginning it was a come as you are approach to dancing in a large open air club in a hot climate...Amnesia is legendary for creating the euphoric atmosphere we came to love during those early Acid House moments.

Acid House smiley face found on Mars

Astronomers have been having a funny time of it lately. We have had reports of Bigfoot (or possibly a Danish mermaid) on Mars, and a "spider" on the fiery planet of Mercury. You would be forgiven, therefore, for thinking the universe is laughing at us.

And it turns out you'd be right. The Sun newspaper reports that a satellite orbiting Mars has now spotted what looks suspiciously like a big smiley face drawn crudely onto the surface of the red planet.

Disconcertingly reminiscent of the "acid house" faces worn by late-eighties ravers, the vast visage stares out from a crater, beaming a wonky-faced message of goodwill out in to the solar system. According to Mars experts, the image is not, in fact, a colossal and somewhat childish piece of interplanetary graffiti, but rather a chance geological formation caused by wind erosion and meteorite impact craters.

Ten days ago Mars-watchers were baffled by what appeared to be the figure of Bigfoot, who had wandered some distance from his more usual roaming grounds in the American Rockies. However, there was also some debate among astronomers as to whether it was in fact the famous Little Mermaid of Copenhagen. Meanwhile Mercury was discovered to have a large geological anomaly of its own, in the form of a giant "spider" formation, believed to be unique in the solar system.

Smiley Faces v Internet Perverts

The smiley face symbol has been recognised as icon on many different levels...Hippies associated it with freedom of spirit, Acid House embraced the freedom of spirit and added its own positive interpretation for the following generation.

Now the smiley's are being used as instruments of FEAR...Whats the point of even having photographs of the kids when most of the shot is covered in those ridiculous alien-like smileys...Someone have a word!

Its the old tired argument for censoring the internet...and Im not being funny but its not as wider problem as the media outlets are telling you...Its an issue but come on smiley faced aliens and internet censorship!!!
